The Cliff family ancestors had moved to Tunstall from the Eccleshall area in about 1725. Cliff's father Harry worked at the local iron foundry in Tunstall, her mother Ann took in washing to supplement the family income, and they had 7 children. Cliff was sent to a different school to her siblings, and this perhaps prompted her more ...Read the rest of this entry »

Crossing the New Jersey-Pennsylvania state line at the Delaware Water Gap, I paralleled the muddy-appearing Delaware River near the Appalachian Trail, the interstate narrowing to two lanes and shallowly ascending into the brown-treed, gray shale rock-covered Pocono Mountains. The slender, finger-like white patterns representing the still-snow-covered ski trails of Camelback Mountain were now visible through the left car window. As the miles rolled by, I thought of the past two ski trips, ...Read the rest of this entry »

I could hardly believe it. More than a year had passed and it had once again been time for the annual company ski trip to the Pocono Mountains. Unlike last year, almost everyone had decided to go the night before and stay in the same hotel, getting a full night's sleep and reaching the slopes early, without getting lost on the way. Or so I thought. Although Sidonie had intended to join us the previous year, her excessive amount of alter-names had proven too many to fit on the invitation and she ...Read the rest of this entry »

Take George, long known for his grueling, bumpy, back-road, low-fare bus service to Florida, as one of the van drivers; Adam, consistently seeking to act out his "ground pilot" fantasy, as the other van driver; Sidonie, whose list of alter-names is so long no one any longer remembers her real one; Annie, as resident grump; Joseph, whose anger diffusion is so profuse that it could easily melt the snow on the far side of the mountain; and Monica, whose persistent, ubiquitous cough has approached ...Read the rest of this entry »

As the sun pinnacled at its noon trajectory on Saturday, July 11, 2009, so, too, did Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome. The staff, having already arrived at 0900, had prepared this pocket of history for its pioneer aircraft air show, and the parking lot, across Norton Road, had deposited an increasingly larger crowd through the covered, wooden footbridge, providing pulse to the heart which one man had first infused with air in his life-long project to recreate this era ...Read the rest of this entry »

Dubai is a veritable magnet, the most advanced, affluent and corporate of all the emirates. The city sits on massive reserves of oil which have been believed to be the force behind its phenomenal growth, a city which was as a fishing village until 1830. Surprisingly, it's the property and construction trade that has been consistently contributing to the emirate's exponential growth for many years. At the centre of the world construction business, Dubai has attracted world's attention with the ...Read the rest of this entry »
